The front of a Kombi consists of a Beam and Trailing arms with eth beam containing a number of torsion leaves collectively called a leaf pack. There are tow of these leaf’s packs on each beam. The center of the beam has a grub screw which holds the leaf pack together and in place. Each trailing arm has a similar setup.
As the trailing arm goes up and down the leaf pack loads and unloads in a torsional motion. This means that the suspension works in up travel and down travel which when coupled with a shock absorber makes for a very nice ride without a lot of moving parts.
When it comes to getting more height out of your Kombi there are a number of different methods:
– Leave it stock and add bigger tires
– Add a center adjuster to the beam so you add more pre-load onto the torsion leaves.
– Fit Raised Spindles
– Space the beam down from the chassis using drop plates
– Space the Beam down from the chassis by boxing out the Chassis
Over the coming months we will delve into each of the above methods as we build up our Crap Box Bus shown above.
