HISTORY
This White DC was originally built by Clyde Fordham. Clyde us to do some work for John Alder and John did the lift. It was originally built with rear reduction hubs and setup a lot like Johns Blue and Grey one. Clyde took it on a Cape York trip and a while after returning decided to sell it. As part of this story I think it is worth mentioning that the below pictures where actually taken back in the 90’s by the current owner after following the guy home to Cannon Hills. It is amazing when you consider that then some 20 plus years later that same guy ended up owning it and has bought it back to life.
After selling what had become called GYRO due to the number plates the new owner did not give it a lot of love and the resulted in an Engine Bay fire. Funnily enough I have heard Brenden Alder has the carbs from it after the engine fire and one is the carb on the bragging rights trophy given out at Warrick Drags ..
At this point I believe Rod Richardson / Peter Page purchased it and built it into a Rally Car, I think they put a Holden V6 in it and at some point the reduction hubs were removed. It got stickered up, did some events and then Graham become the new owner on 1st March 2014 ( same guy who took the pics in the 90’s )
In Grahams ownership the v6 was removed and a Type4 with 1800 heads fitted, it got a 3 rib 1600 Type 2 Transmission and some 930 CV’s. He did a lot of clean up and gave it some very distinct tire track stickers. More importantly he gave is a whole heap of love.
The name “Nine” comes from it being his and Mel’s Ninth Kombi. Called Nine as it is their ninth VW Kombi.
You have to give it to Graham and Mel they certainly seem to get out and about with Nine and clock some miles. They have done Cape York, Simpson Desert, various Endeavour Rallies, and Outback Queensland. Of course it wouldn’t be a Baja Kombi without a few Beach Trip thrown in as well.
